The F1 Car That Sucked Itself to the Track

The Brabham BT46B raced with a giant fan on the back, won its only Formula 1 race with Niki Lauda, and became one of the cleverest engineering loopholes in F1 history.

Formula 1 once raced a car with a giant fan attached to the back.

The excuse for why it was legal is even more genius than the car.

In 1978, Lotus had figured out how to use the underside of its cars to create huge amounts of downforce.

Brabham couldn’t copy it. Their wide, flat Alfa Romeo engine was in the way.

So designer Gordon Murray went a different direction.

He put a giant fan on the back of the car.

The fan pulled air out from under the Brabham BT46B, dropping the pressure and sucking the car toward the track.

Movable aerodynamic devices weren’t allowed.

Brabham’s defense was that the fan was there to cool the engine.

Which it did. That just wasn’t the interesting part.

The other teams were not impressed.

The car entered the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix.

Niki Lauda drove it.

And it won by 34 seconds.

Then Brabham withdrew it.

The BT46B finished its Formula 1 career with one start and one win.

100% win rate.

Would you call this brilliant engineering — or cheating?
