The Japanese F1 Circuit Everyone Forgot

Suzuka and Fuji are famous Formula 1 circuits, but Japan had another. Okayama hosted F1 twice, and Michael Schumacher won both races.

Quick racing trivia:

Name the Japanese tracks that have hosted Formula 1.

Suzuka and Fuji, obviously.

There’s a third one most fans forget.

Okayama

The same 2.3-mile circuit we race in iRacing.

Okayama International Circuit

Back then, it was called TI Circuit Aida. It hosted the Pacific Grand Prix in 1994 and 1995.

So for two seasons, Japan hosted two Formula 1 Grands Prix in the same year: the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka and the Pacific Grand Prix at TI Circuit Aida.

Okayama was designed as a private circuit for wealthy Japanese fans to drive Grand Prix cars.

Then Formula 1 came along.

Senna, Schumacher, Häkkinen, and Hill all raced there.

Schumacher won both F1 races held at this circuit.

Then F1 left.

Today, we can mess up Turn 1 from our homes.
